It's 1:40a.m. on a cold November Chicago night and I cannot sleep. My 6:30 wake up time will be here before I know it but to calm my restlessness I am writing. Tonight I am writing about a show that I have watched regularly for the past 5 weeks, give or take a week. I have wanted to write about this show for a few weeks now because of the dismal ratings it has garnered. The show is Teach with Tony Danza.
Teach is a show that finally shows someone doing good in the world. Tony Danza is back in school as a teacher but he sets himself apart by being a teacher that cares. Today teachers get lost in habit and all the rules they must adhere to. Don't get me wrong rules are needed but when they hamper a teachers ability to do their job change must come. Teachers are too focused on procedures instead of teaching. Go into any high school and ask students who their favorite teachers are and I bet the majority name the same top 5 teachers. Coincidence? Na. These teachers are special. When I was in high school we had a handful of teachers that everyone loved and admired. They were able to give you just enough space and then reel you in when you needed it. However the district, board, whoever, had big problems with their teaching styles and always seemed to make life hard on this exemplary group. These teachers did not want teaching to become habit to them. They wanted to keep it fresh and entertaining.
Tony Danza is striving for the same things as my high school teachers. Yes he needs work on his lesson planning and rule following (What first year teacher does not?) but damnit he cares! He cares enough to inspire the students , to work with the students, to talk to their parents, and to show them he is in the battle with them! A&E has done a phenomenal job capturing this and putting into a show. It's too bad the ratings are dismal.
What has media come to when they have to glorify the bad to gain ratings. To me these networks that produce shows like Real Time With Bill Maher are no back-bone having, non respectful, garbage. Bill Cosby had it right years ago when he wanted to show a successful black family living the good life. People like Tony Danza and Bill Cosby are few and far between in todays world and are united in a special brotherhood they have fallen. Yes, the good people have lost.
Well, nicely written and I totally agree. I've been saying something like this for long time; it has appeared for many years that bad behavior, negative thoughts and talk seem to sell to people rather than proper moral ones. Much of what is on TV today is just horrible. And, then we wonder why there are so many problems with behavior and attitude, talk and communication in this country. Teach is a simple example of a celeb coming full circle with what he knew as a young college graduate he was called to teach. However, life takes us on side-bars, pathways and roads which in turn get us to grow up, to mature and gain confidence and experience. Tony Danza has done all of that and decided to take the step of courage walking away from the familar and his comfort zone for one school year. He did it. Teach was and is well worth the watch and the buy if it does get packaged into DVD set. My hope is that Tony will get certified and obtain his masters and go back into a school district somewhere and continue this endeavor. He brings so much talent and skill to the teaching profession. Teaching is 1/4 preparation and 3/4s theater. Tony Danza can do it. PlSJJ2 or Peggie in Oregon
